Truecaller on iPhone gets spam filters, better spam call detection

Truecaller has rolled out a major update to its iPhone-based app. The update aims at protecting Truecaller's iPhone users against spam calls and messages better.

The first feature is called spam filters and it will enable users to filter out messages coming from unknown sources. Truecaller's iPhone users can enable this feature by downloading the latest version of the app and following this path: Settings > Messages > Message Filtering (Unknown & Spam) > select Truecaller under SMS Filtering.

In addition to spam filters, Truecaller has also revamped its caller ID and spam call detection feature on iPhone. The news was announced by Truecaller's Director of Product Kunal Dua via a series of tweets wherein he said that the feature had been improved to detect and block spam calls better. It can be enabled by downloading the latest version of the Truecaller app and following this path: Settings > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification > select call instances of Truecaller.

Additionally, we've also completely revamped caller ID + spam calls detection on iPhone and it should be a lot more reliable for most (if not all) Truecaller users on an iPhone. Another thing that's been rock solid in my tests.

Truecaller has also updated the changelog on Apple's app store to reflect the change. “Hello! We've made major improvements to spam call detection in this version...Complete re-write for more reliable spam call detection...Previously searched numbers will get identified automatically next time onwards...Various bug fixes for spam call detection,” the changelog says.

Separately, Truecaller in a report last month revealed that it identified 29.7 billion spam calls and 8.5 billion spam SMS for its users in India last year. The company, in the past, has also revealed that India ranked fifth in 2019 in terms of the number of spam calls received by users per month, and eighth in terms of spam SMSs received. Truecaller has over 170 million monthly active users in India.
