Previous reports have said that the expiring media icon will appear next to the image option when users select an image to share. The reports also said that the media file shared using this feature will expire as soon as the recipient leaves the chat. Now, the screenshots shared by the blog site indicate that the recipients will get a notification that would inform about the expiring media file. “This media will disappear once you leave this chat,” the message says.

Furthermore, when the media file has expired, users will see a message, which states “View Once photo expired” along with the clock icons in place of the media file that disappeared. This is somewhat similar to the way the app notifies users about a deleted message when a message has been deleted for everyone in the chat.

That said, this feature is still in the development phase and there is no word on when it will arrive on the company's main app.
