Microsoft has announced a 699-per-month subscription service for it's video game console, the Xbox One which will allow gamers access to a library of over 100 games.

The service, "Xbox Game Pass", will allow subscribers to download Xbox One and 'backwards compatible' Xbox 360 games directly to their device and play them both online and offline, Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, said in a blog post.

The service, which will launch later this spring, will include games like Halo 5: Guardians, Payday 2, NBA 2K16 and SoulCalibur II.

"Xbox Game Pass" subscribers will also be able to buy games in the catalogue at a discount.

Microsoft's main competitor in the console space Sony offers a subscription service for the Playstation 4 called Playstation Now. Playstation Now, costs users $19.99 a month but is limited to small number of countries and requires a persistent online connection as the games are streamed over the cloud. Playstation Now is currently unavailable to Indian users.

In an attempt to differentiate the service from that of Sony's Spencer said, "One of the best things about Xbox Game Pass is that you can discover and download the full titles directly on your Xbox One. That means continuous, full-fidelity gameplay without having to worry about streaming, bandwidth or connectivity issues."

*An earlier version of the story stated that the service would also be available on Windows 10. Microsoft has since updated its official release removing any mention of Windows 10 support.
