If you're looking for a standalone MP3 player for music and videos, here are a few options in the ₹ 12,000 bracket.
Cowon J3 - ₹10,750 (4 GB), ₹12,500 (8 GB) and ₹14,500 (16 GB)
The J3 is slim and light weight, and reads all media formats, so converting videos is unnecessary. It comes preloaded with a Flash player so Flash-based games and apps can run on this device.
The J3 also supports Bluetooth with A2DP and AVRCP. The audio settings that come loaded on to the J3 are very intricate and detailed, designed to allow audiophiles to truly customise their music experience. If on board memory isn't enough, it can be supplemented via microSD cards. The J3 also provides excellent battery life.
Apple iPod Nano 5th Gen — ₹9,400 (8GB) and ₹11,200 (16GB)
Although the fifth gen Nano hasn't changed much in terms of design, it now comes with a VGA camera for video recording, an FM radio with Live Pause, Nike Plus built in and a voice recorder. So even though it looks the same, there are quite a few additions, which make its worth go up.
This model also comes with a built in accelerometer for the display, games and a few other extra features. A Shake to Shuffle option is also added. Video will need to be converted to an appropriate size and transferred to the device via iTunes or a third party software. iTunes is also the primary medium for music transfer.
Creative X-Fi 2 — ₹8,999 (8 GB), ₹11,999 (16 GB), ₹14,999 (32 GB)
The X-Fi 2 is Creative's first touchscreen PMP. Their X-Fi audio technology with features like the Crystallizer and Expand options are provided to enhance your overall audio experience.
The UI comes with a built-in accelerometer for screen rotation if you're viewing images. Like the Cowon J3, the X-Fi 2 also supports external memory via microSD cards.
Philips GoGear Muse - ₹9,400 (8 GB)
The Muse was only recently announced for India and comes with a host of very interesting features. Philips has incorporated their FullSound technology that's designed to enhance audio that could get compressed while transferring. Another addition is the Surround sound option for videos.
