Zoom shocked about JioMeet similarities, says legal team will look into it

Zoom India head Sameer Raje has said that he was shocked to see the similarities between Zoom and JioMeet that was launched in India last week.

Reliance Jio launched its own video conferencing app JioMeet in India last week. And while it became a buzzword on social media soon after its launch, several netizens also started pointed out the stark similarities between JioMeet and the more popular video conferencing app, Zoom. The screenshots posted by some made it difficult to recognise which one is which. However, this got attention by Zoom executives and now they have responded.

Reacting to the developments, Zoom's India head said that he is shocked at JioMeet bearing a stark resemblance to his own app.

In an interview with The Economic Times, Zoom India head Sameer Raje said that he was shocked to see JioMeet's similarities with Zoom's platform. He also said that he knew at some point something like this would happen and that this is not the first time that popular video conferencing platform that witnessed an exponential growth following the Covid-19 lockdown was facing competition.

“What our competitors do is their strategy,” Raje told the publication.

When asked if Zoom was planning to take a legal action Reliance Jio over the stark similarities between the two platforms, the Zoom India head said that there was a lot of discussion going on internally and that his legal team was looking into it.

For those of you who are not familiar with JioMeet here's a quick brief: JioMeet is a video conferencing platform launched by Reliance Jio. It can be accessed via the web and via its Android and iOS-based apps. It streams HD quality video and it can support up to 100 participants in a single meeting. 

The newly launched video conferencing platform not only a user interface that is similar to Zoom but it also has bunch of features that look like they have been borrowed from the platform. The list includes features such as the limit of including 100 participants in a meeting and waiting rooms among others.
