Spotify launches video podcasts for all users globally
Spotify's video podcasts are available on its mobile app and desktop version.
Video podcasts are now available on Spotify starting with a few shows. This is Spotify's latest major development in podcasts following a string of exclusive deals. Spotify's video podcasts are available globally for all users even without a premium subscription.
At launch, Spotify users will have access to a few video podcast shows such as Book of Basketball 2.0, Fantasy Footballers, The Misfits Podcast, H3 Podcast, The Morning Toast, Higher Learning with Van Lathan & Rachel Lindsay, and The Rooster Teeth Podcast.
The video podcasts will start playing automatically when users tune into them on Spotify. Users can also lock their phones and the audio will continue playing in the background. Spotify says that video podcasts consume minimal data usage. Video podcasts are playable on Spotify's mobile app and on its desktop version as well.
Spotify first started testing video podcasts this May with YouTube stars Zane Hijazi and Heath Hussar. At present, Spotify is allowing only select creators to make videos for their podcasts. The streaming service will most likely expand it to more creators on its platform. Joining this soon is Joe Rogan's The Rogan Experience whose video podcasts (vodcasts) will start streaming on Spotify from September 1. Spotify signed an exclusive deal with Joe Rogan earlier this May.
Just last week, Spotify announced The Michelle Obama Podcast that's launching on July 31. Spotify has bagged a couple of more deals for exclusive podcasts with Warner Bros. Group, and Archie Comics. It also recently launched top and trending podcast charts.
