Signal users on iOS can now transfer data to a new iPhone, iPad
Signal users on iOS can for the first time transfer their account and chat history to a new device.
Signal now lets users transfer all their data to a new iPhone or iPad from an existing iOS device. This feature was rolled out last week but Signal announced it later. Signal users on Android already have this feature.
Signal users on iOS who transfer their data will have all information on the previous device wiped out. The company also assures that the process of transferring data is end-to-end encrypted. Signal is touted as one of the safest messaging apps.
The data transfer process takes place over a local connection similar to AirDrop. It will use either a Wi-Fi connection or Bluetooth to complete the data transfer. And users will have to scan a QR code to initiate the process.
How it works
Download and install Signal on the new iOS device and start the registration process.
Once the phone number verification is completed you will be prompted to transfer your account and message history.
The migration prompt will appear on your existing device too which you'll have to confirm.
Then use the existing device to scan the QR code from the new device.
The process will start and data migration will be completed in a few minutes.
Signal lets Android users backup their data so it's possible for them to restore all their chats on a new device. The company said this is not possible on iOS as Apple's Files app is still new and not available on older iPhones.
